Mr. Tancredo,

Your speech at the Tea Party which addressed the importance of literacy tests is ironic. I am currently studying the Civil Rights movement in my U.S. History class (note I am in high school), and the term, "literacy tests", has become familiar to me. This unit has left an extremely negative and emotional impact on me as we have examined the horrible and frightening behavior the majority of white American's exhibited nearly fifty years ago. This is where the irony comes in. Never have I thought "literacy tests" would be considered a good thing in this country yet again. Your speech makes me feel ashamed to be associated with anyone affiliated with the Tea Party, and anyone who remains racist today. Furthermore, it hurts to even say that American's of the contemporary world would even consider such a repulsive tactic in the year 2010, knowing where we came from. Unfortunately for you, someone who you most likely believe should be supplied with a "literacy test" before gaining voting rights is the current President of the United States. Furthermore, there's a reason why he is president, and you are not.
