I am pleased that you elected to respond to my email. I must admit, however, that I was baffled by your response. The only possible explanation is that you believe me to be a black person. I find this to be a fascinating and rather telling assumption on your part. I know you have taken some heat over the racial overtones of your comments, and I can only assume that you are using your response as a means of distancing yourself from such sentiments. Frankly, I found the charges leveled at you as a prime example of the sort of nonsense I was speaking of in my first email. To imply that you were suggesting a return to the era of Jim Crow is absurd; no more or less so than the labeling of President Obama (a millionaire, who only stands to vastly increase his fortune) as a socialist. The dumbing-down of our politics is a national disgrace. Stupidity, as you pointed out, is color blind and is, unfortunately, a ubiquitous element of our national character. We live in a nation in which a significant percentage of the electorate is aggressively trying to supplant science in our schools (a subject beholden to peer review and painstaking methodology) with the tenets of superstition, which are beholden to nothing. I cite this as only one of many examples of the increasingly inane creed of our nation. The fact is that I love this country. Is it idealistic to expect that our national leaders would conduct themselves in a manner befitting rational thought and cooperative behavior? True leaders do not callously toss around hasty words meant only to sow division and provoke discontent.
